Gradual immigration continued until 1914, when most of the Germans in the area were interned for the duration of World War I. Again after 1920 up to 1930 immigration was gradual. However, from 1930 to 1940, there was a large increase in the number of Germans. After 1940 a number of Germans came to TIENTSIN from MANCHURIA. At present there are about 600 Germans in TIENTSIN. There are three main local organizations other than the organization, "Concordia" which existed until 1932. It was then that the Nazi Party got an early start in TIENTSIN, just prior to Hitler's assumption of power in Germany. These organizations were headed by Doctor Altwein. During the years 1936 - 1940 organizations such as the S.A. (Sturmabteilung), Hitler Youth, Nazi women's organizations, the German School and the German "Rent-Tenants Association", "Parents' Organization" and the Chamber of Commerce appeared.
